Q. WILL ANY TYPE OF WOODWORM TREATMENT PENETRATE PAINT, VARNISH, WAX, WOOD STAINS OR WATER REPELLENTS?

A. No - surface applied woodworm treatments (by brush, or spray) can only properly penetrate bare wood, although some may penetrate via existing woodworm flight holes - (the same applies to the the woodworm egg - it can only survive by entering wood) - but there are alternative ways of applying wood preservatives that can take the woodworm treatment chemical beyond the surface - this is called Woodworm Treatment by Injection.

Q. WHAT IS WOODWORM TREATMENT BY INJECTION?

A. There are two types - direct injection into a drilled hole, using a cartridge tube filled with Woodworm Treatment Paste or Gel, or Injection, via a hammer in plastic injector, which has a one way valve, using a syringe.

Q. IS IT WORTH INJECTING WOODWORM THAT I FOUND IN MY ROOF TIMBERS?

A. It is only worth the time and expense of injection when the object is very valuable, or the infested timber cannot be structurally removed, or the type of Woodworm is of a seriously damaging nature.

Q. WHICH INSECTS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE SERIOUS ENOUGH TO GO TO THE TROUBLE OF INJECTING THE WOOD?

A. House Longhorn Beetle and Death Watch Beetle, in the UK and Europe. Common Furniture Beetle attacks might be injected if long term damage was being caused to a non removable structural timber. House Longhorn Beetle is very rarely found in the UK, but is is a serious hazard because it eats timbers so fast.

Q. WHICH PRODUCTS DO YOU INJECT?

A. In dry timber, measured at below 12% Moisture Content (WME) use Timber Paste containing Permethrin, or in damp timber (above 12% WME) use Boron based Paste.

Q. WHY NOT INJECT ALL WOODWORM ATTACKS?

A. Many woodworm attacks are old - they often die out naturally, especially in dry wood. Many common furniture beetle attacks do little structural damage. Chemical injection cannot be justified on a COSHH or cost basis if there is no real risk to the building structure.

Q. HOW LIKELY ARE THE WOODWORM EGGS TO INFEST MY MODERN FURNITURE OR FLOORS?

A. Not very likely - the eggs cannot burrow in through paint, varnish, wax or other finishes.

Q. WHERE CAN I BUY THESE INJECTION PRODUCTS AND THE INJECTORS?
